what are the signs my milk is drying up? if you do not have those embarrassing momentsanymore when your breasts leak when the baby cries, that's a possible sign. or it may be that i've already fed the baby,or that i'm not experiencing the same pavlovian response. if you feed the baby and he's still hungryafterward, that's a sign the milk is drying up. or a growing baby. in theory, the baby drinks as many ouncesas their age per sitting up to about eight
months old. it is not like i have a flow meter to tellme how much i'm making. one indicator you do have is time. if thebaby stops feeding sooner than he used to, and it isn't because he ate the half of thecheerios he didn't drop on the floor, you know you aren't making as much milk. he really is not eating solids yet. you can tell if the baby is not getting enoughmilk. if he tries to drink and doesn't get what he wants, he'll protest loud enough. or he might need to be burped, or is sickor cold.
let's say he stops feeding and then startscrying. break out a bottle or sippy cup with juice or baby formula. after breastfeeding? that's redundant. it is not if the milk is drying up. afterhe stops feeding from you, if he eagerly drinks a few ounces from this other source, you'llknow you're not providing enough. what could i do if my milk is drying up? there's an old wives tale about drinking beerto increase production. but it isn't healthy for both of us to haveeight ounces. you could try to make sure you are fully hydrated,so you aren't running dry due to hydration.
or express extra in the shower or with a milkpump to increase demand. i already have a twelve pound demanding littlething. the milk supply should increase if your bodysenses more demand throughout the day. now i'll feel like a cow trying to pump soi can stay a good mother. giving him cow's milk baby formula as a replacementdoesn't mean he won't love you any less.
